Bradway is in the South-West corner of Sheffield with several bus and rail connections close by. How close depends on where you live - and whether you feel fit enough to walk up and down some of Sheffield's hilly streets.
Bus and train routes, timetables and fares are linked below.
As of November 2023 Travel Line has a free phone number - 0800 952 0002. The old number 01709 51-51-51 will continue to work.
The M17 bus is temporarily no longer running on Saturdays because of a serious driver shortage at TM Travel that reflects a wider industry issue nationally. Other bus services in our area including the 25 also continue to see some cancelled trips because of no driver being available.
The Stagecoach 25 is now fully double decker operated most days. The odd single decker may still put in an appearance if double deckers are off for maintenance.
The biggest issue with buses for Bradway residents now is the lack of any late evening service from and to Bradway. Currently the nearest alternatives are the 76 in Greenhill/Lowedges, the 97/98 in Totley (at the bottom of a very steep hill) or trains at Dore & Totley station (also at the bottom of a very steep hill).
Bus timetables changed on many routes across South Yorkshire on 29th October. The 25 now has an extra early morning bus to Bradway. Route X17 to/from Chesterfield has also gained a late evening limited stop service between Sheffield and Chesterfield with the last bus from Sheffield now at 23:30

Bradway itself has two public bus services and a school bus.
The main route serving Bradway is the 25, operated by Stagecoach Yorkshire which provides the link into the City Centre via Lowedges, Meadowhead, Woodseats and Heeley, dropping off in town on Arundel Gate before continuing on to Woodhouse. This bus runs from the Old Mother Redcap terminus via Prospect Road and Bradway Road up to every 15 minutes from early in the morning until about 8pm.
There is also a more limited local bus service, the M17, run under contract to the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, currently by TM Travel. This provides an hourly daytime shuttle Monday to Saturday between Dore, Totley Brook, Totley, Bradway, Lowedges, Greenhill, Batemoor, Jordanthorpe and St James Retail Park. This is a smaller bus that ventures off the main roads and can be flagged down on Prospect Road, St Quentin Drive and the bottom of Twentywell Road wherever it is safe for the bus to stop (you are requested to avoid junctions and parked cars) as well as the main bus stops by the shops on Bradway Road.
The Meadowhead school bus is the 725, currently operated by First bus, this provides one trip to school and back at the appropriate times.
If you don't mind a walk down onto Abbeydale Road South or Baslow Road, there are also buses 97/98 (operated by First bus) which run along Abbeydale Road into town then on to the Northern General Hospital, up to every 15 minutes. Also bus 218 (operated by TM Travel) runs from Sheffield to Bakewell via Sharrow, Ecclesall, Abbey Lane, Totley and Baslow up to every 30 minutes, with many trips also calling in at Chatsworth House.
Another short walk from Bradway are buses from Lowedges terminus, including the 76 (First bus) and 86 (Stagecoach Yorkshire) which run into the City Centre and beyond via Greenhill and Abbeydale Road.
The Totley and Lowedges buses run later in the evening than the Bradway buses, with last departures back from the City Centre between 11pm and midnight.
Information on bus timetables, routes and tickets along with service updates can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com. This is where you also apply for concessionary passes for senior citizens, the disabled and young people.
You can track most buses live on a map at bustimes.org.
TICKETS
If you are just taking a one off bus ride you can buy single tickets from the driver using cash or contactless payment. The price varies depending on the distance being travelled. For bus 25 you can check the correct fare using the journey planner on the Stagecoach app or at stagecoachbus.com.
There is a concessionary fare scheme for young people under 18 subsidised by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, this is a flat fare of 80p (£1.00 from November 2023); all under 11s qualify for this as a child fare, those aged 11-17 must hold a "Zoom" card to qualify. There are also discounted daily, weekly and 28 day passes available to Zoom card holders. Applications for Zoom cards are made online at travelsouthyorkshire.com.
UNLIMITED TRAVEL PASSES
If you are taking more than one bus in a day then an all day ticket may save you money, likewise if you are commuting daily then a 7 day or 28 day pass is likely to prove good value. If you are travelling regularly but not every day then you can still save a little bit by taking advantage of the "Flexi5" deal, which is a bundle of 5 day tickets for the price of 4 - you choose which 5 days you want to use them but it must be within a month of purchase.
The most popular passes are the range provided by Travelmaster - these include all bus operators in South Yorkshire and there are options to include tram and train travel on the same ticket too. The tickets are loaded onto a smart card. For more information and to buy online visit sytravelmaster.com.
If you are catching the 218 from Totley out into Derbyshire and exploring the area by bus, you may find the Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket good value - this includes most buses in the county (note the Peak Sightseer open top bus tour isn't included, although a discount is offered) and there is also the option of including trains too.
Individual bus operators also have their own range of unlimited travel tickets, for example Stagecoach do Silver and Gold tickets (including adult, child and group versions) valid on their bus and tram services across South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, these are particularly useful if you are connecting at Meadowhead with their X17 Barnsley-Wirksworth service or in town with the Tram Train service to Rotherham.
TRAINS
Our local station is Dore & Totley, on Abbeydale Road South near the junction with Twentywell Lane. Northern run local train services from Sheffield to Manchester via the Hope Valley on an hourly frequency and this is usually the fastest way from our area to get into town or out into the Peak District, bypassing any traffic congestion too of course! At certain times of day the express trains on the line also call at Dore & Totley, providing a viable commute to Stockport, Manchester and Liverpool. A connection at Sheffield or Manchester opens up many more destinations.
Free car parking is available at Dore & Totley station for passengers. Further information about the station can be found on the Friends of Dore & Totley Station website.
A short drive away is Dronfield station, this is on the Sheffield-Nottingham line and can be a better option if you are heading south. This station also has a small car park. There is, however, a charge for using it.
Please be aware that you must buy tickets before boarding any train. There is a self service machine on the platform or you can buy online (or on various apps including Northern and even Uber!). In some cases the single fares are cheaper if booked in advance.
You can check train times, fares and any service updates at nationalrail.co.uk.
