Streets Ahead - contract with Amey
Sheffield Streets Ahead Five year scheme to resurface all city roads and pavements, completely replace all the city lighting, and tackle all aspects of street furniture, including street trees. All within 5 years between 2012-17, and then maintain them until 2037. Amey are the contractors. As of September 2017 it looked challenging to get all complete this year, and so it has proved.
However, Lower Bradway towards Greenhill was tackled as part of the Greenhill sector and all is now complete. There was a blog recording daily progress, but that system is no longer operating. See below for the street tree link.
The latest we have, 21st May 2018, from Amey for B53 TOTLEY section which includes most of Bradway is;
"Street Lighting is complete. Kerbing works continue across the area. We are currently awaiting a programmed date for footway works. Road resurfacing work is currently programmed to start in late July. We will write to all properties affected by these works 10 working days before works start. On street signage will be displayed 5 days before work starts." The full statement for South West Sheffield can be seen by clicking here.
The programmed dates for the remainder of Bradway in the B53 Totley sector were all expected to be by the end of December 2017, butnews from Amey at 19th January 2018 was;
"...the works have been rescheduled now and kerbing work will be recommencing in late January/early February, and then footway and road resurfacing works to start in Spring 2018.
We do not write to residents regarding kerbing works, but will write to all affected by the road and pavement resurfacing 10 working days before, and on street signs will be displayed 5 days before."
BAG has pointed out that it would help to ensure Bradway roads and pavements are kept in better order if Yorkshire Water were to renew some of their life expiring mains which seem to be bursting far too frequently, particularly on Prospect Road.
It's disappointing, but it's a very big programme and those of us who wondered if they could possibly complete it all in 5 years aren't surprised.
To see the map of areas being tackled see; Map although Bradway has largely been described as Totley Rise. It is disappointing that the detailed map originally linked here has been replaced by one that appears to show fewer streets to be resurfaced. Clarification is being sought from Amey.
Microsurfacing is being used on many of our roads. A useful descriptive leaflet produced by Milton Keynes Council can be found here.
All our street lighting was replaced by January 2016.
The LED lights are brighter but angled down to reduce scattering light skywards. Initially they will be set at 80% of maximum brightness to allow for turning up as the light ages. If our bedrooms are too bright we can ask for them to be turned down. If that doesn't help a back spill plate can be fixed, but only after turning down has been tried. .
Street trees are a contentious issue. Lower Bradway trees have all been done and the rest are gradually going..
The rest of Bradway Has now been surveyed and the results of the survey are now available Schedule of trees proposed to be replaced in Bradway and Totley, with new tree types, and reasons for proposed replacement. We have been assured that any trees marked for replacement before then are part of the regular monitoring of street trees and they will be replaced like for like. That should mean most will be flowering cherries.
BAG Chairman's statement dated 19th November 2016 regarding Bradway street trees is here
There are various campaigns to save street trees. However, this website is plotting trees at threat and already felled; Sheffield Trees at Risk The Streets Ahead Five Year Street Tree Management Strategy, 2012-17 is here.

It includes work by utilities comanies and should give planned timescales for all works.
